Day 13 – Sunday 4th March 2018

Still on a natural high from the Aurora Borealis experience last night. Absolutely amazing and “at last!” As I was thinking it may not happen.

A buffet brekkie and then we hit the road doing local stuff today as VIK will see us stay 2 nights.

A drive down to the Black Beach with its “sneaky waves” was interesting as was the geological features of the area. Huge basalt columns cooled into hexagonal “pipes” eons ago. This formation looked very similar to the “Organ Pipes” opposite Calder Park raceway. The area looked like a moonscape.

Back in the car for a 20km drive to what is most likely one of the most visited areas on the South Coast. The epic plane wreck, In 1973 a United States Navy DC Dakota ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur. Fortunately, everyone in that plane survived.

A 4 mile one-way walk to the plane was refreshing and almost never-ending. The land is black, littered with pebbles, rocks and small boulders and would make great movie set.

There were more people around than anticipated and some to the angst of many, climbed up on the fuselage and “posed” for photos without consideration of the many wanting to take the shot.

The 4 mile trek back to the car proved equally bracing in the super cold wind that was blowing and increasing in force. The iPhone advised I did more than 11,000 steps to get to this popular tourist attraction.

A little cafe treasure that we found yesterday was visited again and one of the best mushroom soups filled the empty void depleted after all that walking.

A relaxing arvo as we scouted a location to do more Aurora hunting tonight. We have found a nice spot to wait out the Northern Lights. A long snow and ice covered road heading off to the base of the mountain range in front of us. This had no passing traffic so would be perfect!  We’ll head off later to see if chance will be on our side….

The Adventure Continues…
